Advice on child custody visitation and on what my rights are as a non custodial parent.?

I can not afford a attorney. Can I represent myself? Does anyone know of any sites where I can do my own research? My worry is because I have gangrelated tattoos on my neck I have a criminal record. I finished my probation in 08/2005 I been good so if someone knows of any sites where thier is moms like me let me know please? I do not expect it to be easy but I am willing to take the challenge? I am tired of my ex always getting it his way cause he's never been to jail I have.
