Why did the Zimmermann note enrage Americans?

During WWI, Germany sent a telegraph to Mexico, saying that if Mexico joined Germany's side, Germany would make sure that Mexico got back all the land it had lost to the US during the Mexican War (California, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada, Utah). That's what made Americans mad.
