If you have any cles together ask him what the homework was or if you don't say that a friend was sick and you wanted to let her know what the work was in that cl. Or just use something simple like "nice shirt, I love that band or I missed that teams last game, who won." Guys are easy, just don't stand there for too long after the small talk, that could get awkward.
